Photographer Showcase

Thrilled that my epic, 50 image black and white showcase gallery has just gone live on Zivity. It's called "Monochrome" (of course), and is only the fourth feature to have been accepted. Go check it out!!

At one point, I considered selling my Mamiya but, damn....! What had cost me nearly $5000 originally can hardly be given away now. It is shameful. It has more value to me collecting dust on my shelf than it does in someone else's hands. And, one day, that leaf back will be mine!!

LOL

Actually, had a blast today shooting with my Holgaroid and with a Lomo fisheye camera. Soon as I work through the film (Ilford 100), I will get it developed. Can't wait! Wish I had more time and money to play with film. Wish I still had my home darkroom. I really miss it.

Thanks for re-posting that Christine, much appreciated.

Some of the story sounds similar to what I've done. Started many moons ago on film and shot 50/50 colour and B&W (though never got the chance to try MF), then went to dig' and pretty much ditched film altogether.

Recently I was loaned an old Japanese Kowa 6x6 to play with and put some T-Max, Ilford and Efke B&W through that and really enjoyed it.

Now if only I could afford the new Hassy dig' MF and an old Mamiya MF Film camera to add to the bag I'd be a very happy camper indeed.

Thanks for joining, Wayne. Hope you voted for my set, too. =)

I sent out a long email to my Zivity fans about the process. Hope it answers your questions. I'll post it below.

I'm so thrilled that the head honchos have chosen to publish my gallery, "Monochrome". http://www.zivity.com/photographers/steen/photosets/37 It's my first photographer showcase here on Zivity, and it's a departure from what you're used to seeing from me, single, stand-alone images rather than full galleries.

Monochrome is a collection of fifty images from as many photo shoots. With the exception of the last photo, which was shot on film in Scotland, they all originated as color digital photographs.

Shooting digitally has radically altered my workflow. My job doesn't end when the model packs up, it continues at my desk in the interpretation of the image. Once upon a time, when I was shooting medium format film, all decisions were made at the time of the shoot. Do I want to shoot this in color or b/w? Do I want to use a filter to affect the contrast? Do I want to cross process the film? And on and on... Now, I am free to make changes after the fact, to completely change the mood of a shoot if I wish.

As mentioned in the first photo of the set, I've become known for my vivid color work. In fact, when I submitted the images for my first book, my publisher refused to use any black and whites because of that. For me, though, black and white was my first love, and I still find that it's able to convey something color just can't. It's a whole different animal.

The conversion of each of these images to monochrome was a conscious choice. I hope that they speak to you, and I look forward to reading your comments, too.

Need to be a Zivity member to view the set .... so I joined :) (not sure I'll stick with it though - bugger all Aussie on there).

Lovely contrast and range in those images, did you shoot them specifically with Black and white in mind as the final result, or was it more "Wonder how this'll look in B&W?" during post?

Either way, stuning images and top-class work (as always) - well done.
